Download and install

1. Go to the NordVPN download page : https://nordvpn.com/fr/download/windows/

2. Navigate to your Downloads folder and double-click NordVPNSetup.exe.

3. If asked "Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?" in a pop-up window, click Yes.

4. The installer window opens. Click Next.

5. Select if you want shortcuts for the NordVPN application on your Desktop and/or in the Programs folder in the Start menu, then click install.

6. The installer will continue the installation process. Once done, you will be asked if you want to launch NordVPN immediately. Click Finish to complete the installation.

Setting up and using NordVPN

1. Click the NordVPN logo on your desktop, click Connect to continue.

2. Your browser will open and load the Nord Account login page. First, enter your username or email address, press continue, then finally enter your password.

3. You can also connect to a server in a specific country by clicking on the country pin on the map.

Once connected, the country pin will turn green.

The Quick Connect status bar at the bottom should say you are PROTECTED.

4. If you want to connect to a specific server, click the search bar in the top left corner of the app. Enter a specific country, category or server number with a hashtag (eg United States #5990) to find what you need.

5. Once connected to a server, you will see the white NordVPN icon in the system tray area in the lower right corner of your screen. NordVPN will continue to protect you even if you close the app window.

6. It may also be in the hidden area of the system tray, which you can open with the up arrow.

7. Right-click the system tray icon for quick controls: Quick Connect/Disconnect, reconnect to recent servers, open application, or exit.

Choose between different servers

1. In the left sidebar you will find all the servers we offer, organized by country and specialty.

For example, you can click Specialty Servers to expand the category, hover over the P2P category, and click the three-dot menu to select a specific P2P server. Other specialty servers work the same way.

To see the specialized servers available, change a connection protocol to OpenVPN. You can find instructions for changing the protocol below.

Each server will display its current load (in %) next to its name. The more people that connect to this server, the higher its load will be, which can lead to slower internet speeds.

To connect to a specific server, click on it.

General settings

In the Settings tab, you can configure the application to your liking.

Launch at Windows startup: Allows NordVPN to run automatically when you start your computer. Enabled by default.
Launch Minimized Application: Only displays the NordVPN icon in the Windows system tray (instead of opening the main window) when the computer starts. Enabled by default.
Show VPN connection status notifications: Shows Windows notifications whenever you connect or disconnect from a server. Enabled by default.
CyberSec: Block Ads and Malicious Websites: Protects you from intrusive ads, malware sites, phishing links, and other threats.
Select the application language from the Language drop-down menu. You can select English, Spanish, French or German.
In the left sidebar, you can also access your account details. The Logout button is also at the bottom.

Automatic connection settings

Always on app launch: Causes the app to automatically connect to a server on startup using an Ethernet connection or Wi-Fi network. This does not apply to secure Wi-Fi networks. Disabled by default.
Auto-connect over Wi-Fi: Makes the app automatically connect to a server when you connect to a network: Unsecured Networks or All Networks. Disabled by default.

Unsecured networks: connect to our server automatically when you connect to an unsecured Wi-Fi network. Unsecured Wi-Fi networks are networks without a password and/or networks with weak encryption. It only works when you connect to a new Wi-Fi network or when you change Wi-Fi networks. Also, it does not apply to an Ethernet connection and trusted Wi-Fi networks.

All Networks: Applies only to Wi-Fi networks. The app will automatically connect to a server when using an unsecured Wi-Fi network. You won't be able to disconnect unless you add your current Wi-Fi to trusted networks or turn off auto-connect.

Choose a VPN protocol and server automatically: Let the app choose a VPN protocol and server automatically. Enabled by default.
VPN protocol (visible after disabling the Choose a VPN protocol and server automatically option): UDP is mainly used for streaming and downloading. TCP is more reliable, but also a bit slower, typically used for internet browsing. NordLynx by default.
Auto-connect to: Select the country or type of server you want to automatically connect to. You will be able to select a specific city after selecting a preferred country.
Trusted Wi-Fi networks: Disables automatic connection to specific Wi-Fi networks. For example, you can make an exception for your home Wi-Fi if you trust it.

IMPORTANT NOTE: You will lose Internet connectivity when connected to a Trusted Wi-Fi Network with an Internet Kill Switch enabled.

Kill Switch

Internet Kill Switch: Cuts your internet connection when disconnected from secure NordVPN servers. Disabled by default.
App Kill Switch: Closes specified programs if you lose connection. For example, if you add Skype to the list, NordVPN will close it every time you disconnect. Since it takes a few seconds to reach a secure VPN server, it will prevent your data from leaking when automatically reconnecting to the Internet. Disabled by default.

Split tunneling settings

Split tunneling lets you exclude apps from the VPN connection. In other words, the apps you select to add in the split tunneling feature will keep them unaffected by NordVPN.

Advanced settings

Customize DNS: Specifies a particular DNS server for the NordVPN app.
Obfuscated servers: allow you to bypass network restrictions, such as firewalls. This is recommended for countries with limited network access.
Invisibility on LAN: makes your computer invisible to others on the same local area network (LAN). Keep in mind that once enabled, you will no longer be able to use devices connected via LAN, such as printers. Disabled by default.
Diagnostics: Run the NordVPN diagnostics tool if you encounter technical issues. Collect diagnostic data and provide the ticket ID to our helpdesk for assistance. If the diagnostic tool does not give you a ticket ID, you can send the .zip file to our helpdesk.

Install NordVPN on macOS

If you're using a Mac, the native NordVPN app is the best way to connect to NordVPN servers. We designed it with your needs in mind, giving easy access to features like Double VPN, Onion over VPN, and automated Kill Switch. The app comes in two flavors, IKEv2/IPSec and OpenVPN, each using different VPN protocols to connect.

What is the difference between the two versions?

IKEv2 version

This version of the NordVPN app can be installed directly from the Apple App Store on macOS devices with firmware no older than 10.12. The main advantage of using the IKEv2 application is that it offers the NordLynx protocol. NordLynx aside, the Kill-Switch feature works system-wide, reducing internet access if the VPN connection suddenly disconnects - this way it protects all apps, not terminating them.

OpenVPN Version

Although OpenVPN lacks NordLynx, it does allow manipulation of some additional preferences, such as custom DNS servers. Also, when activated, the Kill-Switch terminates separate applications, instead of the entire Internet connection. The app can be sideloaded from our website, and it can run on earlier versions of macOS, no more than 10.10.

Tip: The security of your VPN connection also depends on your account password. Remember to use a strong password on your account, as it will help you avoid credential stuffing cyberattacks and keep your logins safe and uninterrupted.
